Our next event will take place at the Clark County Event Center serving all of Vancouver and Portland metro, Southwest Washington, and beyond!

People in the PNW are ready to develop, grow, and embrace a homesteading lifestyle. Now we just need the connection to vendors, experts, and community to achieve it, and that is what the West Coast Homesteading Expo is for.

We are excited to share micro farming, urban gardening and farming, and homesteading at any scale. The expo will feature workshops, live demonstrations, vendors with products to support homesteading, expert exhibitors, livestock/backyard animals, and more.

Amie Torkelson

Amie Torkelson, is the founder of a thriving urban farm in Spokane, WA with a bold and practical mission: to empower people to grow food and raise animals in the city. Amie equips people with the confidence and tools to grow their own food, steward animals responsibly, and build a more resilient, connected life and community in the middle of the city.

Ashley Rodriguez

Ashley Rodriguez is a Seattle-based writer, forager, and author of Rooted Kitchen and Field Notes from a Fungi Forager. She is a certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide through the Association of Nature and Forest Therapy Guides and a Wild Guide through the Center for Wild Spirituality. When she's not writing, you'll find her foraging, fly fishing, or digging in the dirt of her garden.

Slow Food, Wild Food: Cooking with Spring's Wild Pantry

Come learn from Ashley Rodriguez, author of Rooted Kitchen and Field Notes from a Fungi Forager. Ashley is a chef, forager, and nature and forest therapy guide. Every spring, before the garden wakes up, the land quietly sets the table first; if you know how to look. Explore the ecology and folklore of nettles, the art of harvesting what the forest offers, and how a "weed" becomes a meal worth savoring. The presentation includes a live cooking demonstration celebrating one of spring's most ancient and generous gifts; nettles. Ashley will teach you about other spring wild foods to be looking for and best practices for foraging.

Kody Hanner is a homesteader, proud homeschool mom, and founder of The Homestead Education, a company dedicated to teaching children self-sufficiency through hands-on learning. Inspired by her family’s move to Idaho and her background in agriculture, Kody saw the need for curriculum that blends academics with real-life homesteading skills. Through The Homestead Education, she empowers families to think outside the box, raise self-sufficient children, and embrace lifelong learning. Her mission is passionate about lighting a fire that will start a revolution to create change within a world that no longer works.

Palouse Heritage

Karl Scheuerman

Karl Scheuerman is General Manager of Palouse Heritage. Raised in a farming community in eastern Washington State, he served as an Air Force intelligence officer and built a successful career in cybersecurity. Driven by a passion for resilience in our food systems, he returned to the family farm help its mission of promoting the value of heritage grains. Karl continues to serve part-time in the Washington Air National Guard and lives in Richland, WA with his wife and three daughters.

From Ancient Fields to Fresh Flour: Rediscovering Heritage Wheat & Home Milling

Come learn from Karl of Palouse Heritage—an expert in pre-hybridized, landrace, and ancient grains—and Sean, a grain scientist and former Director of the USDA’s in-house research agency. Explore the rich history of heritage wheat, the benefits of fresh-milled flour, and how to choose a home grain mill. The presentation includes a live stone-milling demonstration.

Sean Finnie is a Grain Scientist specializing in specialty agricultural supply chains. He previously served as Director of the USDA-ARS Western Wheat Quality Lab, leading research to improve wheat quality. With over 15 years of experience across food science and grain technology, he has worked with organizations including Bay State Milling, Cargill, and KU Leuven. Sean holds a Ph.D. in Grain Science from Kansas State University and is dedicated to advancing the quality of U.S. agriculture.

Larry Littrell is a lifelong homesteader, writer, and relocation specialist with more than forty years of hands-on experience building, adapting, and—when the season was right—moving homesteads. He understands that a homestead is more than land and buildings; it’s a way of life, a set of values, and often a deeply personal legacy.

Larry is the upcoming keynote speaker at the Eastern Washington Homesteading Expo, where he shares practical, experience-based guidance for navigating change in rural living. Through his work with Legacy Homesteads, he helps families make clear, confident decisions about staying, moving, or starting over—without losing what matters most.

Sacred Oak Apothecary

Kristyn Walch

Kristyn Walch, the Herbalist behind Sacred Oak Apothecary, first learned about herbalism while attending Bastyr University for their Naturopathic program. Once she saw the power of herbs by making Salveation for her eczema (the same formula still used today!), she decided to leave the naturopathic program and instead pursue herbal medicine. She went on to get her Master of Science in Herbal Medicine from the American College of Healthcare Sciences. Shortly after graduation, she founded Sacred Oak Apothecary and started formulating amazing herbal remedies for friends and family. Today, she continues to create quality formulas and products, often working with the very Naturopathic Doctors she started school with.

Pierce County Beekeepers Association

Katie Marler

Katie is the Education Chair of the Pierce County Beekeepers Association and has loved bugs her whole life. She's a long-time WA resident with some time spent in Tokyo, Japan as well as 4 years of college on Oahu, HI. She is a mom of 3 and serves on the PTA for their local elementary school. She enjoys gardening, foraging, and painting. In 2015 she was inspired to start learning about bees and the possibility of beekeeping when a huge swarm landed in her backyard! She enjoys the tinkering aspect of beekeeping and learning how to build things herself, and especially loves raising queen bees. Eventually she'd love to open an all-bug zoo here in Tacoma (or anywhere) and feature the coolest indoor observation hive in the US!

With over nine years of experience teaching on-farm classes, she brings a wealth of practical homesteading knowledge and a love for handmade arts to every session.
